A group of prominent figures in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) has signed an open letter calling for the temporary suspension of training for powerful AI systems over concerns about the potential threat they pose to humanity.
The signatories include Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and owner of Twitter,
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and researchers at DeepMind.
The letter, which was issued by the
non-profit Future of Life Institute, warns of the risks posed by advanced AIs, particularly those with human-competitive intelligence.
The group argues that recent months have seen an out-of-control race to develop even more powerful digital tools, without adequate consideration of the risks involved.
They warn that AIs could flood information channels with misinformation, replace jobs with automation, and pose a threat to human control over civilization.
The letter calls for a halt in the development of AI systems more powerful than the recently released
GPT-4, at least temporarily, and for the establishment of new regulatory authorities dedicated to AI.
The letter has been criticized by some experts for focusing too much on speculative, futuristic risks, while ignoring current problems caused by AI.
