Another Bay Area freeway shooting has claimed the life of a driver in a pickup truck in Oakland, California.
The incident occurred on Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland at 11:55 p.m. on Wednesday, and while the shooting happened on the freeway, the two vehicles involved later exited on Lakeshore Avenue near the Trader Joe's at Lake Merritt.
The driver of a green Toyota Tacoma was killed, with video footage showing at least one bullet hole that shattered the front window of the pickup.
A damaged Toyota Camry was also discovered nearby, but it's unclear how this car was involved. The lack of witnesses and cameras, the mobility of Bay Area rivals, and the dynamic nature of a freeway crime scene make it difficult for law enforcement to track down those responsible for these crimes.
Experts point out that the California Highway Patrol was never intended to investigate shootings and homicides, further complicating the issue.
According to data analysis by KTVU, Bay Area freeway shootings are increasing, while the numbers in the rest of California are decreasing. Last year, there were 154 shootings across Bay Area freeways, compared to 77 in Los Angeles. The freeway was closed until 3 a.m. on Thursday.
